General Profit/income information on retailers, distributors, and publishers

Hello,

I am continuing the research I started with my Undergraduate thesis (most of which can be found at www.sequart.com)  I am currently looking for financial information without much progress.  I can not seem to find any information on the general revenue of the major forces in the comic book industry.

What is the basic annual income of Diamond? (where can I find these numbers?)  As the world's largest distributor of comics, seeing their profits would be a good indication of where the industry as a whole is at.

Also what is the average profit range for local retailers across America (I would imagine this question would be difficult to answer due to regional differences and internet sales)  For this, finding more information about reader demographics (age, income, # of titles each month) would be necessary.

Finally, what are the general income ranges for the major publishers like Marvel, DC, Darkhorse, Image, etc?

As I mentioned in a response to another of your posts, the estimated total revenue of all comics, magazines, and trade paperbacks sold by Diamond annually can be found here. It does not include all the other products Diamond handles, which are really outside my research purview. These are revenues only, not its final profit. Those figures are unlikely to be found anywhere.

From that overall Diamond number, you usually need only apply the overall market share from the year to get to the sales any publisher you need. I do not have Diamond's year-end market shares posted here, but the CBGXtra pages used to have the shares from individual months — those would differ somewhat from the annual total, but would give you a general idea. And then, of course, you could also look at such things as Marvel's quarterly report, which breaks out publishing revenues.

Again, as for retailers, the only public research on average profits used to be available from Diamond, in the 1990s as part of the package they sent out to prospective new accounts. I do not think that's been part of the package for some time, but I may be wrong.
