circulation data for the 70'
Hello,

First I'd like to introduce myself. As you can see my name is Ofer Bernstein. I'm an MA student writing a thesis in communication studies about the representation of publicly elected figures in mainstream comic books.

As part of my thesis, my advisor suggested I'd use the top 10 bestselling titles of every year as a definition of "mainstream" having those titles probably the ones read by most of the audience. I know the
site has a 1960' section for bestsellers and a promise for 1970' is posted as well, but for a long while now. Is there anyway I can find out those figures other than sift through the "CBG standard catalog" and collect them one by one (I own a 4th edition book and even tried doing that before I found out about the site)?

Other than that, I have some question regarding the circulation figures for the 30'-50'. I read all the posts made by Russ Maheras and others, so I know there is a big problem with clearly defining the top 10 bestsellers of those years. Can anyone
think of another way to determine which were the bestsellers of those years?

Thank you for your time,

Ofer B.

Hi, Ofer. The problem with the later figures is that if I had them prepared as lists yet, I would have had them to post. Since it collapses all that data in the Catalog and more it takes some time to develop the lists — and a lot of weeding out has to happen, too. One problem is that the titles change (like Journey into Mystery to Thor and back, twice) and they're known by one name in my system – but the proper name must be attached to them when they appear in the annual rankings. So that takes a while — and as a hobby effort on my part, I can only get a certain number of hours into working with the data each month. I expect it will be some time still before I have many more years prepared as lists.

If you have the Catalog, though, you're part of the way there — if you're only looking for the Top 10 or 5, it shouldn't be hard to track the usual suspects.

There's no way to beat the 1930s-1950s problem, as far as I know. Russ has posted what little I have seen.
