Trades vs. Graphic Novels
[Originally posted 11/21/2007]

Hi folks. Does anyone have a sense of what proportion of the 'graphic novel' market is made up of trade-paperbacks? I've never seen any numbers on this, but it would be interesting to know since, I think, trades tend to be mostly superhero stories, while GNs tend to be mostly non-superhero (those are obviously big 'guesstimates'). Thanks, Danny Braun

More than 95% of the market for "comics with spines" is reprinted material, as opposed to original graphic novels. That is figured exclusively of manga, but then again most manga appearing here are also reprinted.

There are a number of reasons for that -- I got into the distinction, which many mass-market publishers tend to overlook, in the piece I wrote for the 2007 Novel and Short Story Writer's Market. Unfortunately, I don't have that essay on me at the moment, but it would be a good thing to excerpt for the site. Essentially much of the business model depends on there being two revenue streams -- periodical and collection; for an original graphic novel, there's only one bite at the apple. It's also harder to greenlight OGNs that aren't pre-sold, in a sense, by a big name creator or character.

That's very interesting... I'd certainly like a look at that article if you put it up on the website. Any idea or guess at the percentage of the reprinted material that's made up of superhero stories? Seems like it would be the majority.
