Effects of major events on other sales
[originally posted 11/6/2007]

Just curious ... when there is a major event - like Civil War, obviously that issue does pretty well if not the top.  How does that effect sales of other comics?  For instance, does the customer usually buy the major event issue in addition to the usual amount of comics or substitue the event comic for a usual purchase?  I guess the calculation would be whether in the month that the major event comes out - how does the rest of the sales look outside of that issue - down or the same?

For Civil War, most of the tie in issues saw huge increases in sales. In some cases those issues sold two or three times the normal sales for the title. With the following issue after the tie in, sales were usually back down to right around how the title had been doing. So, events like Civil War can boost sales in the short term but there doesn't seem to be any major long term gain from these events for the other titles.

Countdown, on the other hand, hasn't been boosting sales for the tie in issues like Infinite Crisis did. But, that is the difference between a weekly 52 issue event series and a 7 issue monthly event series. With a weekly series, there is less of a "need" to get tie in issues.
