Customer trends
[originaly posted 4/12/2007]

I'm doing a story on customer trends at comic book stores - older vs. younger customers, new vs. regulars, buying patterns, etc. Would like to know if you have any information on customer trends and if you would be available for an interview before the end of April? Thanks

There's not much publicly available information at all out there, though I have some general ideas.

I'll send you an e-mail through the site with my contact information -- I plan a media e-mail address for the site, but I don't have it set up yet.

Hi.  My name is Danny Braun and I'm new to the site.  Very pleased to have found it!

If you're putting together something on this, I'd also like to take a look at it.  I don't have any specific questions, but am curious about reader trends as well.

As I told the reporter when we spoke, there's not much specific data available out there when it comes to demographics. We know that the gender split went 95/5 male once super-heroes took over, although the influence of manga and the release of lines like Vertigo has begun to change that. We just don't know for sure how much it has changed by.

We likewise know generally that the average reader's age has been increasing over the years, dropping substantially again each time we have one of our periodic booms (like in 1990-1993). Manga has again had the effect of bringing that average age down a bit, too. But as far as hard numbers, there's not much out there, besides what the publishers put in their advertising media kits. And those are both based on proprietary research, and also tend to stress the youth of the readership.
