The relaunched Thor came close to topping the charts in a month that lagged 10% behind 1997 in Top 300 comics dollar preorders.
Dark Horse's top new series launch would wind up being the most important new release in the charts, in terms of future impact: Frank Miller's 300 #1. Placing 42nd with nearly 49,000 copies preordered, the May 27 release would later go on to inspire feature films. Image's "Cliffhanger" titles continued their launches, and retailers reported strong sales on them.
DC topped the relatively new Final Orders dollar market shares, a calculation that the publisher had lobbied to see included as it included reorders and eliminated preordered comics that did not ship. Green Lantern #100 and the JLA 80-Page Giant were strong sellers at retail, according to shop-owners' reports to Comics Retailer magazine. Less successful for the publisher were its "Girl Frenzy" event titles, which wound up in few retailers' top-seller lists.
Diamond released dollar rankings for the Top 250 comics only in Diamond Dialogue magazine, but there was a glitch in presentation that caused the dollar rankings to simply be the numbers 2 through 301 in exact order; the real data was never released online or to the media, so we'll never know the exact dollar rankings. What you see below are the rankings based on total dollar value — units times cover price — which is a good estimation, but not exact, because Diamond's regular dollar rankings are based on wholesale and not cover prices.

Diamond was still getting the kinks out of its trade paperback definition, with some expensive comic books making the list. The Spider-Man: Made Men issue, at $5.99, was classed as a graphic novel by Diamond and led the chart.
